Understanding emotional regulation during stress and conflict

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.”

Viktor E. Frankl

The Window of Tolerance is a practical framework for understanding how your nervous system responds to stress, conflict, and emotional overwhelm. This guide explains the difference between hyperarousal (feeling anxious, reactive, or overwhelmed) and hypoarousal (feeling shut down, numb, or disconnected), and how both can affect communication and relationships.

When you are within your window, you are more able to think clearly, stay present, and respond with intention. Outside of it, your nervous system shifts into survival mode, making it harder to listen, reflect, or stay connected.

This resource helps you recognise early warning signs, understand your own patterns, and make more grounded decisions in the moment. It also introduces simple ways to pause, regulate, and return to a state where meaningful communication is possible.
