Why Are My Teenager and I Always Fighting?

Helping you understand conflict and reconnect with your teenager

"The quality of our lives depends not on whether or not we have conflicts, but on how we respond to them."

Thomas Crum

Why Are My Teenager and I Always Fighting? is for those times when ordinary conversations seem to become difficult far more quickly than you expect. You may feel as though you are trying to help, set a boundary or ask a simple question, only to find yourself in another argument without fully understanding how things escalated.

There can be several reasons for this. Adolescence brings important developmental changes, including a stronger need for independence and greater sensitivity to criticism or rejection. Emotional responses can also happen very quickly, particularly when a teenager feels under pressure, misunderstood or challenged.

This resource looks at some of these processes in more detail, helping you understand what may be happening beneath repeated conflict at home. It also includes practical ways to reduce tension when conversations begin to escalate, alongside additional resources that may help with parenting, emotional regulation and communication.

You’ll also hear directly from Carly Webb, Clinical Director and Psychotherapist at Vitus Wellbeing, about some of the questions she may consider when working with fractured parent-teen relationships. The final section looks at how therapy can help identify the patterns behind repeated conflict and support you in reducing unnecessary arguments, rebuilding trust and creating a stronger connection with your teenager.
